Marcus Aurelius
Meditations 4.5
Death is such as generation is, a mystery of nature; composition out of the same elements, and a decomposition into the same; and altogether not a thing of which any man should be ashamed, for it is not contrary to [the nature of] a reasonable animal, and not contrary to the reason of our constitution.
Marcus Aurelius, Meditations 4.5, translated by George Long
Death like birth is a secret of Nature—a combination of the same elements, a breaking up into the same—and not at all a thing in fact for any to be ashamed of, for it is not out of keeping with an intellectual creature or the reason of his constitution.
Marcus Aurelius, Meditations 4.5, translated by C. R. Haines
