Privacy

Stoicism Now has no accounts and asks for very little. This page explains what is collected and who handles it.

If you sign up for The View from Above, we send a confirmation email to the address you give. Nothing is stored unless you click the link in it. Once you confirm, your email address is kept with our email provider, Resend, and used only to send you the magazine. Every email has an unsubscribe link, and unsubscribing stops all further issues.

Search

When you use the quote finder, the text you type is sent to OpenAI so that it can be matched against the passages by meaning. We do not store your searches or link them to you. Please don’t include personal information in a search.

Reading progress, saved quotes and settings

The site remembers where you got to in each book, the passages you bookmark, the quotes you save, and your reading settings (text size, page colour and choice of translation), by keeping them in your own browser. Unless you sign in (see Accounts, below), they are not sent to us or to anyone else, with one exception: if you have chosen a translation, that choice is included when you search, so that quotes come back in the translation you read. Clearing your browser’s site data removes all of it.

Accounts

Signing in is optional. If you sign in with Google, we receive your name, email address and Google’s identifier for your account, and we keep a copy of your reading progress, bookmarks, saved quotes and choice of translation so they appear on all your devices. Google does not see what you read or save. Text size and page colour stay in each browser. This is stored in a database run by Neon, which we use only to provide this.

You can delete your account at any time from Your library: this removes your details and everything synced from our database straight away. It stays in your current browser until you clear it.

Analytics

We use Google Analytics to see which pages are read and how people find the site. It sets cookies and collects usage information such as pages visited, approximate location and device type. We use this only in aggregate, to improve the site.

Hosting

The site is hosted by Vercel, which keeps standard server logs, including IP addresses, for security and reliability.

What we don’t do

We don’t sell or share your information with advertisers, and we don’t build profiles of visitors.
